Program Description

Adapted from UC Davis Human Lactation Center's Baby Behavior 101, this one day seminar gives clear information about baby body language and cues.  This includes cues that the baby wants to engage or disengage as well as signs that the baby is irritable, drowsy, or in a quiet alert state.  Seminar participants will gain important insight into what babies are trying to communicate in their unique and often difficult-to-understand body language. When counseling breastfeeding mothers or teaching health care professionals, baby behavior messages can be woven into breastfeeding guidance. Understanding baby behavior can impact in-hospital and clinic breastfeeding rates, parent satisfaction and confidence.

Objectives

Following the didactic presentations, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate between behaviors associated with “problem management” versus “emotional regulation”;
  • Demonstrate ability to recognize specific infant cues;
  • Describe the importance of “active sleep” in infant health and development; and to
  • Describe why baby behavior messages may be relevant in hospital settings.

The content in this workshop has been adapted from Baby Behavior 101 by UC Davis Human Lactation Center.
